The International Campaign for Compassionate Cities - April 2012
|
International Campaign for Compassion Cities is Ari's most recent focus. He served as the Director of the International Institute for Compassionate Cities for Compassionate Action Network (CAN) International, an American nonprofit organization soon to serve as the home for the Charter for Compassion.
During Ari's tenure as Director of the International Institute, he oversaw the growth of the campaign from one Confirmed Compassionate City and no formal Candidate Compassionate Cities to eight Confirmed Compassionate Cities and more than 80 Compassionate City Candidates as well as compassionate state, region, nation, university, and school candidates. He was instrumental in enlisting the participation of Muhammad Ali and others in support of the International Campaign.
CAN International has granted Ari a fellowship so that he can now focus on his writing, lecturing, and educational efforts.
For his work with the International Campaign for Compassionate Cities, Ari received the 2011 Richard Hunt Smith National Peacemaker of the Year Award.
His presentations on compassion, the International Campaign, and related topics include:
- A presentation on compassion and the International Campaign for Compassionate Cities at the United Nations in New York as part of the TED@UN event.
- A class, with Karen Armstrong — author, TED Prize recipient, and creator of the Charter for Compassion — at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) on the the International Campaign for Compassionate Cities.
- A lecture at Simon Fraser University with Karen Armstrong on compassionate cities, businesses, and cultures.
- Compassionate Responses to Conflict and Violence at the University of Louisville.
Ari is now working with organizations and governments to implement compassion-related policies, practices, and training as well as to establish outcome metrics for evaluating program efficacy.
